Engineers occasionally joke, “If it doesn’t fit, force it.”
I addressed this topic previously in a 2016 post, Mind-Control: Fiction or Nonfiction? That was a nonfiction update on a field of development at the core of my novel about a virus exploiting a computer-brain interface: PsyBot. I conceived of the novel at the height of the cyberpunk era, the late ’80s and early ’90s, when such speculations were rooted in the dark web of DARPA research and, well, speculative science fiction. (My recent update to the novel brings the “future” developments back to that crucible of the early ’90s, under the AI-suggestive title, Chameleon.)
Nowadays we have the likes of ubermensch Elon Musk not only salivating over such possibilities, but funding active and public research and deployment, in an era which represents the “coming out” of the cyborg.
On selling his soul to the devil, Musk quipped, “Even in a benign [AI] scenario we are being left behind…. So how do you go along for the ride? If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em.”
On how his new brain–computer interface, Neuralink, will make you feel, “Musk likened the process of his neural stimulation device zapping the brain to ‘kicking a TV.'”
Hmm, so that’s what this is really all about?
Not “superman” for everyone, but just for the chosen few (at the top, of course).
And the rest of us?
Locked in Corona limbo, we sit with the status quo, chanting spiritual bliss and banishing politics to the angry serfs. Or, we imbibe mass media swill and parrot it till our teeth ache. Or, we take up arms on behalf of our captors, since it’s damned boring around this dump. And if the freedom we get to exercise is taking it out on laggards and nay-sayers, well then, like the man says… you take what you can get.
They’ve programmed us from birth anyhow, to serve in their cyborg army. To grow and serve their food. To pay them with our taxes and vast consumer wealth–subsidized, on top, plus a few kickbacks and golden parachutes, a trillion-dollar bailot or six, what’s the difference? You’re talking one thousand, or six thousand billion? It’s quantum financing, now: which means nothing but unlimited power.
For the rest of us, Go get a job doesn’t cut it anymore, so just do like in Cambodia in the 1970s, or India or Southeast Asia in 2020: Go back to the rice fields. Up north, Go back to the forest sounds good until they’re all cut down. Until the game is gone, the insects dead, and no birds sing….
What? I say. This sterile planet is not our heritage. Cyborg heaven, let them go back where they came from.
Elon, get a life. The rest of us have work to do, gardens to tend, and songs to sing together again.
